Airsoft Battle Days: A Checklist

Part of what makes airsoft guns so popular is their authenticity and preparation for airsoft skirmishes is just as realistic. Getting ready for an airsoft skirmish is exciting, nerve-wracking and strategic – and we want to make sure you don’t miss a beat before heading out to the battle field. Here’s a quick checklist to double (or triple) check before each airsoft battle.

  • Airsoft gun(s)

  • It’s pretty obvious, but you don’t want to forget your airsoft gun on a battle day. Many airsoft fanatics like to clean their gun the night before or morning of, an airsoft skirmish so they can ensure its functionality; if your gun has any kinks, you want to find out before you’re on the battlefield with limited supplies and options. If you have one, stow away your airsoft gun in an airsoft gun bag for safe and easy transport. The airsoft bags are big enough to fit your other gear as well as your gun, so if you pack it all in there, you only have to grab one bag as you walk out the door to the skirmish.

  • Airsoft ammo

  • Next to your airsoft gun, bringing along ample airsoft ammo is crucial to your ability to outlast on the battlefield. Eject your magazine and load it up pre-skirmish with quality airsoft bbs. Make sure that you choose quality airsoft ammo that won’t jam up your airsoft gun or pistol during game play. Even if you don’t have a high capacity magazine, as long as you bring extra bbs you can outlast the competition. Toss a bag of extra ammunition into your airsoft gun bag and you’ll be ready to engage without worrying about running out of airsoft bbs.

  • Airsoft safety goggles & face protection

  • Just like real the deal, in a milsim game like airsoft, safety and protective gear is vital. The small, dense airsoft bbs are a huge safety concern; therefore, make sure you have impact resistant airsoft goggles. Another recommendation for safety is to protect yourself with a mesh full-face mask.

  • Ghillies or other camouflaged gear/attire

  • Talk with your team to discuss a uniform to wear on battle day. Typically airsoft players will individually equip themselves in camouflaged gear to match the battlefield. Be sure to think about the area where you’ll be playing airsoft: is it more green-hued like a forest or woods or is it more neutral like open plains or a desert? Wear gear that reflects the environment in which you’ll play. If you have a particularly competitive or intense skirmish, be sure to think about a head-to-toe tactical ghillie suit.

  • Random supplies to fix guns and parts

  • Come prepared for your skirmish with tools to fix a simple gun error: electric tape, oil, cleaning patches, multi-head screwdriver and a rod to fix ammo jams. Don’t allow for surprises on the field and over-plan for problems you may encounter.

  • Nourishment

  • Skirmishes will get your heart rate up, so avoid sugar crashes or low energy when you’re playing on the field by packing granola bars, trail mix, water bottles and electrolyte-packed drinks. Bring more nourishment than you think you’ll need in case a fellow team member is running low.

  • Review strategy

  • What kind of airsoft role do you have in skirmishes? Review milsim strategy with fellow airsoft enthusiasts before a big game and talk tactics. If you know the opposing players, your team can discuss their strengths and weakness and possible areas for domination. Check out our airsoft resource center for a number of helpful field strategies.

  • Additional supplies

  • Depending on your gun and your type of game-play, you may need to toss a few extra supplies into your airsoft gun bag. If you plan on battling with an airsoft electric gun, bring an extra battery or two. If you’re playing the sniper role, think about bringing binoculars or an airsoft rifle with a scope for a higher shooting range. You may want to bring along some green gas if you have a gas or CO2 gun. Once again, you can never be too prepared for an airsoft battle.

If you have a special pre-airsoft skirmish ritual, make sure to add that to this checklist. Head out early to the battle, get a map of the territory to learn the battlefield (if you can) and talk strategy with your team. You are now fully equipped to dominate in an airsoft skirmish.

Top 10 Reasons Airsoft is Better than Paintball

Any airsoft fanatic knows that the truly best military simulation sport out there is airsoft; however, some paintballers and non-players remain unaware of the benefits and advantages airsoft has over paintball. Here are the top 10 ways in which airsoft skirmishes trump paintball games:

1. Airsoft game play is more realistic than paintball play

Airsoft guns look like real guns, so much so that legally airsoft manufacturers must include a 6mm orange tip at the end of the barrel to identify it as an airsoft gun and not a firearm. Airsoft guns resemble real firearms in many aspects: their barrels, machinery, magazines and accessories more closely mirror firearms than paintball guns.

2. Shooting airsoft ammo allows for better accuracy than shooting with paintball ammo:

Airsoft bbs are smaller than paintball pellets, so they experience less wind resistance and therefore, are more accurate. Airsoft bbs are less visible to the opponent because of their smaller size, which adds to their accuracy. Also, when playing paintball, players may see the larger paintball pellet flying toward them and can take cover accordingly, which decreases your hit percentage.

3. Airsoft skirmishes are more tactical than paintball games

With the realism of the airsoft guns, tactics play a large part in airsoft battles. Players really feel as though they are on the battle field and must act strategically and intelligently to win a skirmish. With the ability to release large rounds of airsoft ammo quickly, bum rushing opponents and sloppy strategy will lead to a quick defeat; therefore, designating a chain of command (see reason #7) is vital. The highly tactical aspect of airsoft battle helps transcend the sport into a milsim reality.

4. Buying a quality airsoft gun is cheaper than getting a paintball gun

A quality electric starter airsoft gun costs around $22.95 and airsoft ammo is extremely cheap, too - $11.95 for a round of 4000 airsoft bbs. Paintball guns and ammo cost significantly more for comparable quality, around $79.95 for a beginner paintball gun. Paintball pellets also carry a bigger price tag at $59.98 for 4000 rounds of paintball ammunition.

5. Airsoft guns have greater usability than paintball guns

Airsoft guns vary in weight, ranging from as light as 2 pounds to heavier than 6 pounds. The airsoft ammo can be sized at .12 grams or as hefty as .28 grams; however, .20 gram airsoft bbs are the most common size. On the other hand, the average paintball gun on the light end weighs about 5 pounds and can reach more than 15 pounds for nicer, heavier-duty models. Maneuvering a paintball gun becomes clumsier and less agile than handling a lighter airsoft gun. Due to the lighter gun and airsoft bb weight, airsoft guns are easier to carry around, which increases their usability.

6. Rounding up a pickup game with airsoft guns is easier and less messy than assembling a paintball gathering

This airsoft skirmish advantage is pretty uncontested in the paintball verse airsoft world – it is much easier to get together an airsoft game than a paintball game. First, when playing airsoft, the location has fewer restrictions than when playing paintball. Playing airsoft is legal on private property, so you and a friend could easily have a one-on-one battle in someone’s big backyard or land. Second, airsoft play is much cheaper so it can be easier to rally people to play. Paintball play– because of the paint splatter – is much more restricted.

7. In airsoft games, having defined roles is important and commonly used

Airsoft skirmishes typically divide into two teams, with detailed and strategized roles for each player on the team. The main roles for airsoft battle include a team leader, tactical officer, rifleman, recon, sniper and heavy infantry; however, there are additional roles that can be designated to aid in the order on the field.

Paintball play sometimes involves a chain of command, but the structure is much more flexible and open to interpretation than in airsoft. Paintball teams normally just separate into three classes: frontmen, mid-players and back players.

Airsoft is a more realistic milsim game which explains why tactics, strategy and a defined hierarchical chain of command are used more frequently than in paintball games.

8. There are more options to upgrade your gun in airsoft

As discussed in reason #1, quality airsoft guns are cheaper than paintball guns; therefore, it is easier (and less expensive) to update and upgrade your airsoft gun than a paintball gun. Beyond the lower cost of tricking out your airsoft gun, more options for upgrades exist. External upgrades like fore grips, scopes, sights and switches are available at affordable prices as well as internal upgrades to boost performance like nozzles, fuses and gearboxes.

The best part about the low prices for airsoft parts and accessories is that you can get into the sport as a beginner without having to front a lot of money. Then, when you become more advanced, upgrading is easy and affordable.

9. Airsoft bbs shoot faster than paintball pellets

Airsoft bbs fly at speeds of 150 to 600 feet per second (fps), with an average speed of over 300 fps, whereas paintball pellets only achieve speeds of 200 to 300 fps on average.

10. The military practices with airsoft guns and ammo for training

Military personnel and police officers use airsoft guns during training before transitioning to real artillery. Just this month, officers in Dane County, Wisconsin used airsoft guns and rifles for their basic training at a closed-down public school.

We think these are the top 10 reasons why airsoft is better than paintball, but we’re sure you airsoft aficionados know many more!

How to Set Up the Most Epic Airsoft Battle Ever

Most airsoft enthusiasts will agree, nothing beats a hardcore, heart-pounding airsoft battle. The trick to executing a successful airsoft skirmish is planning. Create your own epic airsoft battle by following this guide.

  • 1st: Watch battle videos and get inspired. There are a number of awesome airsoft battle videos filmed everywhere from Texas to Scotland. Check around YouTube for the most exciting skirmishes and get an idea of how other airsoft enthusiasts have organized successful matches. With the right amount of planning and people, you can replicate and even improve upon these examples. Do a little research about other major airsoft games to find out what they did to make it work. Then, put your own spin on it and make it even more epic.

  • 2nd: Figure out a way to market and advertise your epic airsoft battle. Make a Facebook event? Create a Facebook group? Mass text message all your airsoft friends? Strategize about how to get an epic crowd of airsoft gun aficionados and spread the word. You can get the ball rolling and determine interest before choosing a location and other logistical details.

  • 3rd: Find an airsoft-friendly location with an open, flat field where mil-sim events are allowed. Paintball and airsoft fields are easy go-tos, as they already meet safety restrictions and have a challenging battle course with built in obstacles. Keep in mind that a truly epic airsoft battle might require a bigger area with more challenges and obstructions. If you do find a great location, make sure that airsoft guns are permitted and also ensure that you have been granted permission to use the location. Your next location-related task is to equip the space with realistic obtrusions – like bunkers, tunnels, mounds and walls. Try scouring your local warehouses or grocery stores for big wooden planks to set up on the field.

  • 4th: Discuss and clearly outline the skirmish rules and safety guidelines. The two biggest kill-joys to an awesome airsoft battle are someone getting seriously hurt or players not following the rules. The rules and safety guidelines are fundamental to your event's success. It’s amateur, unprofessional and dangerous to just wing it and think you’re above the rules; so, be sure to discuss airsoft rules and safety beforehand.

  • Sample rules include:

    • Gun safety on until all players have their goggles on

    • Hands and gun in the air = neutral/safe, no shooting at that person

    • Create a safe zone

    • Decide a number of strikes per round before being considered “out”

    • Determine length of rounds

    • Decide upon game tactics and choose game type. For example, you might choose Last Man Standing or an objective-based format like Capture the Flag. You can check out more than 30 airsoft combat scenarios in the Airsoft Megastore player resource center.

    • Basic safety gear: goggles, face mask (not mesh), heavy clothing

  • 5th: Determine a prize. Will the team (or individual winner) get anything? Talk to local paintball or airsoft businesses to see if they’d supply a gift certificate or free round for the winning players. Sometimes the win is prize enough.

  • 6th: Get out there and enjoy yourself! Play hard, be stealthy, use the barriers and cover. Play fair and work with your team for total airsoft game domination.

Airsoft Standard Size AEGs VS. CQB AEG

When playing with airsoft bb rifles, it is always important to choose the right equipment for the type of environment where you will be playing. Part of choosing the right equipment for the environment is choosing the right airsoft gun to use. When playing with airsoft rifles outdoors, most fields have a large playing area and have a higher FPS limits (usually around 400 FPS). Playing on a larger outdoor field normally means that you will be engaging targets at a longer range, and maneuverability through tight spaces won’t be as important. CQB fields are normally indoor fields with limited space for engaging your target with your airsoft bbs, and they normally have much lower FPS limits (usually around 350 FPS). Maneuverability is much more important on CQB fields, where there isn’t much as much space for moving and engaging your targets.

When playing at an outdoor field where range is important and the FPS limits are set much higher, a standard size AEG rifle is the best choice. Standard Size AEGs normally fire airsoft bbs between 375 – 400 FPS, and have a longer barrel than CQB size airsoft AEGs rifles. The standard size AEG’s longer inner barrel allows it to hit targets at longer distances than a CQB AEG; however the longer barrel limits its maneuverability in a CQB type environment. Another standard size AEG feature that is great for outdoor fields but limits maneuverability in indoor fields is a full length stock. Having a full length stock helps to properly aim down the sights or scope, increasing your chances of hitting your target at long distances, however it also increases the length of the AEG making it more difficult to move in close quarters environments. There are some standard size AEGs guns that work well in both CQB and outdoor field environments. These AEGs rifles normally have shorter barrels such as the M4, R36, and M5 type AEGS. Some standard size AEG rifles also have folding or collapsible stocks that make them much more maneuverable in CQB environments to accurately fire the airsoft bbs.

In a CQB situation it is important to have an AEG rifle that is compact and lightweight, allowing you to be much more agile. CQB engagements are normally fought out in building type structures with limited space to move, and shorter engagement distances. CQB AEGs are designed specifically for CQB environments, with short barrels and stocks to make room clearing and cornering much easier. Their compact design and lower FPS is perfect for quickly engaging targets around corners, and allows for much greater maneuverability. The CQB guns lower FPS design normally means that it will have a higher rate of fire than a standard size AEG, which gives CQB AEGs a slightly faster trigger response. CQB AEGs can be used at outdoor fields as well, but you will probably have to move in close to your targets which can leave you vulnerable.

Making sure you have the right airsoft equipment and right airsoft gun for the type of environment where you will be playing is always important. Having a gun that is too bulky for a CQB field or having a gun that can’t hit targets at longer ranges at an outdoor field is likely to make your day of airsoft much less enjoyable. It always helps to do a little research of the field you will be playing at to determine what equipment to bring. And remember it is always better to over prepare than under prepare. If you are unsure about the type of field you will be playing at, bring both a CQB AEG and a standard size AEG just to be safe!

    Choosing the Right Airsoft Shotgun

When choosing an airosft shotgun there are several important questions you should ask yourself.
    • How do you plan to use the shotgun? Are you going to be target shooting or actually using the gun during skirmishes? Perhaps both? What sort of weather will you be using the shotgun in?

    • What sort of distances do you need the shotgun to shoot? Is distance important to you?

    • What price range are you working with? Are you looking to make a long-term investment in a gun that can take some knocks on the field? Or do you have budget constraints?

If you are planning to just use your shotgun for target practice or you are looking to save money, spring airsoft shotguns (aka pump shotguns) are your best option. While pump shotguns are popular in CQC (Close Quarters Combat) skirmishes, these guns are incapable of automatic or semi-automatic fire, as is the case with all spring-fire airsoft guns. If rapid fire is critical to you, a spring shotgun may not be the best choice as they require you to cock the shotgun between each fire. Rather look for electric or gas airsoft shotguns which allow for rapid, repeat fire. Both types have advantages and drawbacks. Electric shotguns tend to have a lower velocity while gas guns are more expensive and freeze up in cold weather.

The type of airsoft shotgun you choose will also have a direct impact on the distance yours shots will fire. Always look at the FPS (Feet per second) of the gun, with larger FPS firing longer distances. FPS varies greatly in airsoft shotguns, with anywhere between 325 to 1000 FPS. A quality pump airsoft shotgun can shoot around 450 FPS, delivering a very good price to power ratio.

Lastly, if you are shopping on a budget, don't overlook the promotional deals available online. A lot of shotguns are paired with quality pistols and AEG's, helping the smart airsoft shopper get the biggest bang for their buck.

    Choosing the Right Airsoft Shotgun

Different situations on the airsoft field call for different firearms. Airsoft shotguns are an obviously larger and heavier alternative to handguns and pistols, but their popularity is rooted in their usefulness. Their incredible power and accuracy make airsoft shotguns ideal for long distance outdoor skirmishes and target shooting.

At first glance, an airsoft shotgun looks similar to a rifle, but they do differ in several fundamental ways, including construction, mechanics, and firing technique. I frequently recommend airsoft shotguns to avid players looking for a new, fun challenge. If you are used to a semi automatic airsoft weapon, the shotgun could be the next challenge you have been looking for.

Airsoft shotguns are very realistic and come in a variety of styles, from double barreled to pump action, multi-shot tactical shotguns. There are a few considerations you will need to make when deciding which shotgun is right for you.

Pump Action vs. Spring. Spring airsoft shotguns are cheaper, but pump action shotguns provide a tremendous power to price ratio. If you are looking for power, I recommend pump action to my clients because they are just a better value when it comes to power. Pump action shotguns deliver a much higher FPS.

Full Stock vs. Pistol Grip. There are three airsoft shotgun grip options to choose from, full stock, pistol grip or some shotguns offer both grips. Take the time to try out both and you will feel which one is right for you. It really comes down to comfort and personal choice.

Double vs Single Barrel Shotguns. A double-barreled airsoft shotgun allows you to load two chambers and thus have twice the firing action and have a very realistic kick-back feel. There are multi shot spring powered shotguns available as well, but keep in mind that the spring version will have a shorter range.
