Choosing the Right Airsoft Shotgun

When choosing an airosft shotgun there are several important questions you should ask yourself.
  • How do you plan to use the shotgun? Are you going to be target shooting or actually using the gun during skirmishes? Perhaps both? What sort of weather will you be using the shotgun in?

  • What sort of distances do you need the shotgun to shoot? Is distance important to you?

  • What price range are you working with? Are you looking to make a long-term investment in a gun that can take some knocks on the field? Or do you have budget constraints?

If you are planning to just use your shotgun for target practice or you are looking to save money, spring airsoft shotguns (aka pump shotguns) are your best option. While pump shotguns are popular in CQC (Close Quarters Combat) skirmishes, these guns are incapable of automatic or semi-automatic fire, as is the case with all spring-fire airsoft guns. If rapid fire is critical to you, a spring shotgun may not be the best choice as they require you to cock the shotgun between each fire. Rather look for electric or gas airsoft shotguns which allow for rapid, repeat fire. Both types have advantages and drawbacks. Electric shotguns tend to have a lower velocity while gas guns are more expensive and freeze up in cold weather.

The type of airsoft shotgun you choose will also have a direct impact on the distance yours shots will fire. Always look at the FPS (Feet per second) of the gun, with larger FPS firing longer distances. FPS varies greatly in airsoft shotguns, with anywhere between 325 to 1000 FPS. A quality pump airsoft shotgun can shoot around 450 FPS, delivering a very good price to power ratio.

Lastly, if you are shopping on a budget, don't overlook the promotional deals available online. A lot of shotguns are paired with quality pistols and AEG's, helping the smart airsoft shopper get the biggest bang for their buck.

Airsoft Boot Camp

Hard-core airsoft skirmishes require physical stamina. Airsoft’s high degree of realism demand that you carry heavy equipment, maneuver through difficult terrain and push yourself physically. If you play to win, it is important to work on both endurance and muscle strength. Miliary.com’s fitness center is an incredible resource for military style workouts, but for the sake of simplicity, the following list is a quick Airsoft Bootcamp that will increase your endurance and strength, as well as improve your airsoft game.

Intervals. You should work in 30 minutes of aerobic activity at least three times a week. While jogging has its health benefits, intervals will give you the quickest health returns. You will burn more calories, increase stamina and prepare your body for quick bursts of energy on the field. Start with a moderate jog for 5 minutes to warm up, and then alternate a 1 minute sprint with a 2 minute recovery jog. After 30 minutes of intervals, do an easy jog for another 5 minutes to cool down.

Upper body. In realistic airsoft skirmishes, you rely heavily on your upper body strength. Carrying equipment requires muscle endurance and steadying your weapon requires isometric muscle isolation, both of which can be pretty exhausting. I recommend doing 3 sets of 10-14 reps of the following moves twice a week for improved airsoft field performance:

  • Chest/bench presses

  • Push ups

  • Barbell rows

  • Overhead presses

  • Bicep curls

  • Tricep dips

Lower body. Your lower body will get a nice workout during your interval runs, but there are a few strength building moves that are worth including in your regimen. I recommend 3 sets of 10-14 reps of the following, twice a week:

  • Barbell/dumbbell squat

  • Lunges

  • Plie squat with weights

Why Airsoft Guns in Law Enforcement and Self Defense Training?

Contrary to popular belief, Airsoft is not limited to game play and war reenactments. For many years both law enforcement and military branches have used a variety of Airsoft guns to practice for emergency situations and train in realistic scenarios. Using Airsoft pistols in these situations allows for mistakes, corrections and necessary learning experiences for policemen and military personnel without the loss of life.

Airsoft blowback pistols are often used by policemen and law enforcement for practice as they match the dimensions and weight of the actual pistols used. In these scenarios, the policemen and women, and military personnel, have the opportunity to practice, test and evaluate their tactics, equipment, and physical and mental capabilities in a realistic and safe training situation.

The drills they practice involve engaging targets – as they would in a real situation – that may react and shoot or fight back. Training in such a realistically simulated environment allows those in law enforcement to be prepared so they react without hesitation, doubt or mistakes.

In an environment where law enforcement increasingly deals with violent crime and national security, it has become crucial for each officer to demonstrate proficiency and competency with regards to their weapons handling and situation control, and Airsoft presents a cost-effective method of training to ensure the highest standards of capability.

This situation-based training involves non-lethal weapons of the handgun and long gun variety, like Airsoft blowback guns which have a sliding top section similar to real pistols which further allow for the realism of the training scenario. Pistols like this use gas (propane or green gas usually) to power the gun and therefore, do not require cocking prior to firing. Additionally, since blowback pistols are typically automatic or semi-automatic and have a higher fps than spring loaded guns they have capabilities closer to those of the handguns used by law enforcement. More recently, Airsoft shotguns have been incorporated into self defense and gun safety classes in order to better train people. Utilizing a replica of real guns prepares people in case they need to use the real thing someday – they feel more comfortable and are more familiar with the guns they need to handle as they have practiced with a similar model.

Since Airsoft replicas are 1:1 in scale, they are the best alternative for self defense and training classes and with correct eye and body protection (which is required for all Airsoft uses – including game play) the potential for any bodily injury is minimal. Airsoft is expanding beyond gameplay as more and more people see the value in using them for important law enforcement training and self defense classes.

What Airsoft Ammo Should I Use?

You’re now the proud owner of a new Airsoft gun. You picked the Bolt Action Kar 98 "98K" Mauser Carbine WWII Rifle or the M9 MEU Tactical Semi Automatic Gas Blowback Pistol - you’re ready to play! Except for one thing: which ammunition should you get?

Each gun has its own specifications and arenas of usage – sniper rifles are not used for close range combat and hand guns are no good for long range shooting. Ammunition can seriously impact how your gun functions and the types of game play in which you can participate.

Airsoft bbs come in different shapes, sizes and weights. Most airsoft pellets, also known as BBs (ball bearing) are normally 6mm spherical plastics. They typically run from 5.93-5.98mm in diameter, but don’t be fooled by these small numbers! Even a small, plastic pellet can do damage if protective gear and correct game play are not enforced. Some guns can even use bullets up to 8mm in diameter!

BB pellets are measured in hundredths of grams and are available in different weights ranging from .12g to .43g.

A different, newer option for Airsoft guns are the starch-based biodegradable bb pellets. Oftentimes, these pellets are required in outdoor game play where sweeping up is not an option. They eliminate having to try to locate the minuscule bbs, without causing harm to the environment!

How do diameter, weight and material affect game play?

Velocity: lighter pellets achieve higher velocity; therefore selecting a .12g bb will result in faster speeds. However, this lighter Airsoft ammo is subject to external factors like wind. Additionally, heavier bbs will retain velocity faster than their lighter counterparts – that is, less heavy bbs will start of fast, but slow down quickly.

Trajectory: trajectory is the curved path a projectile takes; lighter pellets have more markedly curved projectiles.

Weight: Heavier pellets cause more damage to its target, especially at close ranges; additionally, they may only be used with more powerful Airsoft guns.

Why is it so important to select one or the other? Having the wrong size, type or even weight bb pellet could damage your gun.

  • .12g are usually used for gas and spring-load weapons, not for high-end AEGs (automatic electric guns).

  • .23g is a heavy weight for AEGs and .25g is the heaviest weight a standard AEG, blowback or spring gun can manage.
  • .30g-.36 are standard to heavy pellets for sniper rifles; 0.43 g is for highest levels of upgrades sniper rifles.

Airsoft gun bbs may not damage the skin but are extremely dangerous to the eyes, so goggles or other protective gear must be worn at all times while playing Airsoft sports.
